NYC Boba Then vs Now
Latest Update: April 25, 2026 – Bubble tea’s still NYC’s obsession. Just yesterday, I tweeted about Xing Fu Tang opening in FiDi across from Printemps. Their brown sugar deerioca milk tea takes the classic to new heights—more on that below.

Back in 2011, I first encountered bubble tea in Flushing, Queens. Every fourth person on the crowded streets clutched one of those mysterious drinks with floating black pearls. It took me months to connect the dots: “Bubble tea.” Then, on a whim in NYC’s Chinatown, I tried it at Ten Ren on Mott Street—super crowded, efficient staff, open late. Ten Ren Tea Time is closed now. Only their bulck tea store is open.

I went for the basic Black Milk Tea with Tapioca. Sweet, creamy black tea shaken with chewy tapioca bubbles. Not “real tea,” but city life magic—like discovering American coffee amid my purist habits. It didn’t dilute my love for loose-leaf; it just added fun.
Ten Ren’s menu was a chooser’s nightmare: 13 traditional iced teas, 14 fruit teas (green or black, no milk), 12 milk drinks, 15 shredded ice options. Hot tea? Available, but the lines were all for boba.
Bubble Tea Evolution: 2011 vs 2026
Bubble tea exploded from NYC curiosity to a $3B+ global industry (15% YoY growth). It’s tea’s playful “American coffee”—mass-appeal, not dilution. Here’s how spots stack up:
| Spot | Year | Vibe | Must-Try Drink |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ten Ren (Chinatown) | 2011 | Crowded, no-frills | Black Milk Tea w/ Tapioca |
| Xing Fu Tang (FiDi) | 2026 | Trendy, IG-ready | Brown Sugar Deerioca Milk Tea |
Never saw lines like Ten Ren’s in Paris or London Chinatowns back then—has that changed? Feel free to tell me your theories.
Why It Still Thrills Tea Lovers
Bubble tea blends tradition (real tea base) with innovation (tapioca, milk foams). In 2026, try matcha-boba fusions or low-cal options. Pro tip: Shake vigorously for perfect bubbles.
